Ryanair switches to 100% digital boarding passes
Key Points
  • Ryanair moves to 100% digital boarding passes via app as of November 2025.
  • Check-in and bag drop close 60 minutes before departure, up from 40 minutes.
  • Passengers without smartphones can get free printed passes if checked in online.

Ryanair confirmed that all passengers will now receive a digital boarding pass through the Ryanair App when they check in online. The airline said the move eliminates 300 tonnes of paper annually. Passengers who fail to check in online will be charged a £55 (or 55 euros) airport check-in fee. Online check-in opens 60 days before departure for those who have purchased a seat, and 24 hours before for passengers without a reserved seat. It closes two hours before scheduled departure. Additionally, check-in and bag drop services will close 60 minutes before departure, a change from the current 40 minutes. Dara Brady, Ryanair's chief marketing officer, said in a press conference: "From Tues 10 Nov next, Ryanair customers will see airport check-in and bag drops close 60 minutes before scheduled departure, instead of today's 40 minutes. This will allow these 20% of our customers (who check in a bag) more time to clear through airport security and passport queues, and get to their departure gate on-time, especially during busy travel periods when some of these airport queues can be longer." Ryanair said check-in and ticket desks will remain available at all airports. Passengers without a smartphone or tablet can receive a free printed boarding pass at the airport if they have checked in online. Boarding pass re-issue fees will disappear with digital boarding passes as long as passengers check in online before arriving at the airport. Ryanair urged passengers to check in online to avoid fees. The airline also said digital boarding passes improve customer service and rebooking during flight disruptions.

Regarding baggage, Ryanair increased its personal bag allowance to 40 x 30 x 20 cm following an EU law amendment. For identification, Ryanair does not accept a driver's license or birth certificates for travel; a passport or National Identity Card is required. All passengers departing from a Moroccan airport must check in online as normal, according to Ryanair.

In comparison, EasyJet allows digital tickets for most flights, but 21 airports in its network do not support mobile boarding passes as of 2026, according to EasyJet. Passengers flying from certain airports in Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, Serbia, and Kosovo must print their easyJet boarding pass on paper, EasyJet said.

Specific details remain unclear, such as which airports in the EasyJet network lack mobile boarding pass support, and the exact date when Ryanair's check-in closure time changes to 60 minutes. It is also unknown whether there are exceptions for passengers with disabilities or special needs under Ryanair's digital-only policy.

If you do not check in online up to 2 hours before your scheduled departure time, you may check in at the airport up to 40 minutes before departure, but you will be charged an airport check-in fee.
