RMC Motorsport, in collaboration with the Spanish motorsport federation (RFEDA) and backed by the Spanish government, has announced plans to enter the World Rally Championship’s top class in 2027. The Spanish team will roll out its all-new challenger in October and intends to contest at least half of the 2027 rallies before mounting a full championship assault in 2028. Despite the announcement, key technical details of the RMC car remain unclear.

Reports indicate that it is not known which existing vehicle’s technology underpins the project, and the bodywork will be an original design. The origin of the powertrain is also undecided, with discussions ongoing with a current Rally2 car maker. The 2027 season will introduce new WRC27 regulations.

Current Rally1 cars will be phased out after this year. 6-litre turbocharged sustainable fuel engine. It is understood that existing Rally2 cars will be eligible to compete in the top class in 2027.

Toyota and private team Project Rally One are also building WRC27 cars. M-Sport Ford and Lancia are likely to enter the top class with upgraded Rally2 cars, according to sources. Daniel Sordo, 42, a part-time Hyundai driver, has won three WRC events and achieved 58 podium finishes, according to the World Rally Championship’s official statistics.

Regarding the RMC project, Finnish publication Ilta-Sanomat quoted Sordo as saying he would help informally but not as a paying job. DirtFish reported that a representative asked Sordo if he would be interested in driving for RMC next season. The team’s 2027 driver lineup remains undecided.

RMC Motorsport was founded by Roberto Mendez in 2004 and has almost a decade of experience in Group N5 rally car development, according to the team’s history. Initial testing of the RMC car will be conducted by Javier Villa, according to the team. Villa, 38, has experience in GP2, WTCC, hillclimb, and Spanish national rallying, according to his career profile.

The team intends to race its own cars and also build customer cars for sale, according to its stated plans.
