Ric O'Barry, the founder of Dolphin Project, has worked as a consultant in many countries to move dolphins in captivity to created pools in their natural environment. He is well acquainted with the dolphinarium in Kolmården. More and more countries are enacting laws against dolphins and whales in captivity.
SVT has contacted Kolmården on repeated occasions to ask questions about the future of the dolphin operation and what they think about Ric O'Barry's proposal. Kolmården responded in writing to SVT on Monday.
There they can experience the rhythm of the waves, weather changes, tides and dive deep and perform their natural needs. I'm not guessing when I say that we can do this. We have already done this in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Brazil, Haiti, South Korea and Indonesia. Those have all been successful projects.
We propose that they move the dolphins to a more natural subtropical environment, in Italy or Spain.
When visitors come in they can see a live video on the screen of the place where we have delivered the dolphins to. There they can take part in the quality of life they can have in their natural environment.
