Region Uppsala has allocated 2.5 million kronor for a new IT system at Akademiska sjukhuset aimed at improving surgical workflows and work environment, according to a press release from the regional government. The investment is part of the 'Kraftsamling för sjukvården' (Healthcare Mobilization) initiative approved by the regional board on April 7, 2026.

The new 'Context Handler' system is designed to address current inefficiencies where surgical staff must log into three separate IT systems: Cosmic, Metavision, and Orbit. According to the regional government, this multiple login requirement and manual patient selection process has led to work environment concerns, with a safety representative filing a complaint about the issue in 2019.

The Context Handler platform will allow staff to log in only once while maintaining patient information across all systems. The project follows a 2022 pilot that lacked system support for broader implementation. Implementation is planned in two stages over 18 months, starting at Akademiska sjukhuset with potential expansion to Lasarettet i Enköping. The second stage depends on positive results from the initial implementation phase.
