Region to develop plan to improve hospital work environment

Key Points
  • An action plan will be developed to improve work environment for healthcare staff at Östersund Hospital.
  • The move follows alarms about high stress and sick leave, including a sick rate of around ten percent in the intensive care unit.
  • The region director will collaborate with trade unions to propose measures, with a formal decision expected at a regional board meeting.

Region politicians in Jämtland Härjedalen have announced that an action plan will be developed to improve the work environment for healthcare employees at Östersund Hospital and other operations in the region. The decision comes after alarms from the intensive care unit and other healthcare activities about stress and sick leave. The health and medical care committee chair, Katarina Nyberg Finn, stated that the region director has been tasked with reviewing various measures to strengthen the work environment, in collaboration with trade unions.

In recent years, stress-related sick leave has been high on several departments, including the intensive care unit, where the sick rate has been around ten percent. The intensive care unit head recently sounded the alarm and demanded measures, calling for better schedules and shorter working hours to allow staff more recovery. While work to improve the work environment has been ongoing for several years and sick rates have decreased, it has not been sufficient, with many employees still experiencing high stress and lack of recovery time.
