Region proposes 14m SEK Visby ice hall renovation
Key Points
  • Region Gotland proposes 14 million SEK renovation of Visby ice hall for Hockeyallsvenskan compliance.
  • Renovation includes flexible boards, expanded locker rooms, TV adaptation, and safety improvements.
  • Investment is temporary and movable, with annual capital cost increase of 1.8 million SEK over ten years.

8 million SEK per year over ten years, according to Region Gotland. Other operating costs are not expected to be affected. The region emphasizes that the investment should be temporary, cost-effective, and movable, as Visby ice hall may eventually be replaced by a new facility.

The renovation will be financed through use of equity capital. Required measures include installing a flexible board system, expanding locker rooms, creating spaces for referees and doctors, adapting for TV broadcasts, improving safety and crowd management, and installing a LED screen, according to the administration. The administration assesses these measures as necessary and the costs as reasonable compared to similar investments elsewhere.

I got a list yesterday that was quite long, there I see a lot of work that needs to be done if they are to be able to play in Hockeyallsvenskan.

Erik Ryman, League Sports Manager (Liga-sportchef)

According to Hockeysverige, an inspection by the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation identified replacing the boards as the most important item. When Vimmerby underwent a similar process after promotion, the cost was around 7 million SEK, Hockeysverige reports. The matter will be decided at the regional council meeting on June 15-16.

Visby/Roma HK qualified for promotion to Hockeyallsvenskan in late April, but the ice hall currently does not meet requirements. Erik Ryman, league sports manager, told Hockeysverige that the club was not close to meeting arena requirements and had already received dispensations for Hockeyettan. A meeting was described as positive, with the time aspect becoming the main challenge; the cost was not discussed.

Visby/Roma plans to replace the facility with a new ice hall, but it will not be ready by the start of the 2026/27 season.
