Following the murder of an ambulance nurse in Harmånger last autumn, Region Gävleborg has reportedly implemented new safety measures for ambulance workers. According to SVT Gävleborg, the incident sparked national debate about ambulance worker safety and drew sharp criticism from multiple parties including the Ambulance Union (Ambulansförbundet) and the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket).
The initial investigations presented earlier this year reportedly received failing grades from the Work Environment Authority, which stated that the region did not meet legislative requirements and threatened fines if measures were not taken. In response, Region Gävleborg has now developed a series of measures to strengthen safety and working conditions for ambulance personnel.
The new measures include easier access to patient records, low-affect approach techniques, and more thorough risk assessments. The murder in Harmånger has highlighted ongoing concerns about workplace safety for emergency medical personnel across Sweden.
