Recycled Christmas Trees to Create Fish Habitats in Oxelösund Waters

Key Points
  • Approximately 100 recycled Christmas trees are being repurposed as fish habitats in Oxelösund's harbor
  • The project is a collaboration between Kustbostäder housing company and Sportfiskarna conservation association
  • School children from Peterslundsskolan helped prepare the tree bundles for deployment once the ice melts

In an innovative environmental project in Oxelösund, Sweden, approximately one hundred recycled Christmas trees are being repurposed to create habitats for spawning perch in the Baltic Sea. According to public broadcaster SVT Sörmland, the initiative is a collaboration between the municipal housing company Kustbostäder and the environmental conservation association Sportfiskarna.

Children from Peterslundsskolan participated in the project by helping to bundle the tree branches into structures that will be sunk in the harbor entrance. The recycled trees, which were collected after Christmas celebrations in the city, will serve as spawning grounds for fish.

We have to wait a few weeks until the ice has melted

Pär Sjöholm, Project leader from Kustbostäder

Project leader Pär Sjöholm from Kustbostäder stated, "We have to wait a few weeks until the ice has melted" before the structures can be deployed. During the workday with the tree bundles, lessons were also held on fishery conservation and ice safety knowledge.

The project represents a creative approach to both recycling and marine conservation, turning holiday waste into valuable underwater habitats that could help boost local fish populations.
