Rare northern lapwing sighted in Sweden due to early migration
Key Points
  • A rare northern lapwing sighting in Västerbotten is linked to unusual migration patterns.
  • Record early bird arrivals are driven by intense high pressure and early spring conditions.
  • Other rare sightings include a king eider that attracted crowds.

According to Christer Olsson, the northern lapwing is rare and should not normally be in Västerbotten, as it breeds in a few pairs on Öland and Gotland but otherwise lives far away in Asia. Olsson said the bird has undergone extended migration, with the individual in Sorsele likely continuing to fly due to the warmth over Västerbotten. The exact factors causing this specific extended migration beyond the general high pressure and early spring remain unclear.

Olsson attributed record early bird arrivals to intense high pressure and early spring, noting many birds are here earlier than ever before. Multiple reports indicate there is currently an enormous migration of birds and ducks from south to north.

Other notable rare bird sightings include a king eider observed at Kont, which Olsson described as the rarest sighting so far. According to Christer Olsson, the northern lapwing is a bird that stands out and is unlike anything else. He said there were probably a hundred people there looking at the king eider.

Meanwhile, the non-native mandarin duck is being seen increasingly often in Norway now compared to before, according to major media reports. The mandarin duck was in Bodø two years ago, according to Morten Andre Mella. It is originally a resident bird in China that is quite threatened and has been brought to Europe via parks and private collections. Although the mandarin duck does not belong in Norwegian nature, it does not pose a major risk to the environment, and mandarin ducks are joining this migration. The current population estimate and trend of mandarin ducks in Norway, along with their precise ecological impacts, are not confirmed.
