Rainbow Bridge Reopens After Refurbishment, Repairs Early
Key Points
  • Rainbow Bridge reopened after refurbishment completed six months early
  • Bridge connects Jefferson and Orange counties with steep incline and historic height
  • Repairs included road surface, railings, fasteners, and steel connectors

The Rainbow Bridge connects Jefferson County and Orange County over the Neches River, carrying drivers between Port Arthur and Bridge City. It is famous for its anxiety-inducing steep incline and was first built in 1938, among the tallest on the Gulf Coast at a height of nearly 200 feet, equivalent to a 20-story building. Its main span is about 680 feet, with the bridge totaling approximately 1,450 feet in length.

Repairs included rebuilding the road surface, fixing safety railings, and replacing thousands of metal fasteners and key steel connectors. During the reconstruction, congested traffic was detoured to the neighboring Veterans Memorial Bridge, which was built in 1988, runs parallel to the Rainbow Bridge, and reaches a height of about 120 feet. The Veterans Memorial Bridge spans a total length of about 9,440 feet, with a main span of roughly 640 feet, making it somewhat shorter than the Rainbow Bridge.

The Texas Department of Transportation announced on social media that overnight crews wrapped up work ahead of schedule and all three lanes are open with traffic flowing smoothly. Social media users have shared their experiences, with one saying the bridge gave them anxiety, another recounting their daughter had a panic attack crossing it, and a third noting they have had nightmares about it. The total cost of the renovations and any specific safety incidents that prompted the shutdown have not been disclosed.

The impact on local traffic patterns and specific engineering challenges involved in the refurbishment remain unclear.
