Rail line in Norway to reopen after landslide closure

Key Points
  • Rail line between Storlien and Hell in Norway reopens March 23 after landslide closure.
  • Delays due to steep slopes and winter weather; reopening before Easter traffic.
  • Line originally set to open in December 2025 after electrification, now postponed.

The Meråkerbanan railway line between Storlien and Hell in Norway will reopen on March 23, according to Norwegian railway authority Bane NOR. The line has been closed since a landslide on November 7. Initially, officials hoped for a quicker reopening, but challenging conditions, including steep slopes up to 40 degrees and winter weather, caused delays.

The reopening is timed to occur before the Easter traffic period begins. The line was originally scheduled to open in December 2025 after electrification, but that has been postponed. Until March 23, trains are being replaced by buses.
