Rail chaos hits Scandinavia and UK with multiple incidents
Key Points
  • A ground fault at Oslo S halted all train traffic through the station.
  • Multiple signal failures, switch errors, and other incidents caused widespread delays in Scandinavia.
  • In Sweden, the Uppsala commuter train will be discontinued, and an X2000 wheel crack led to emergency stops.

Bane Nor reported that a ground fault at Oslo S caused a complete halt to all train traffic through the station. The fault was part of a series of disruptions across Norway and Sweden, including signal failures at Lillestrøm station and between Holmestrand and Drammen, switch errors on the Western Main Line and at Lillestrøm, and a landslide on the Bergensbanen. A tree blown over the track between Ed and Öxnered caused a train to hit it, stopping traffic between Oslo and Göteborg, Vy said.

A fire on a freight train in Lillestrøm was caused by overheating brakes, Brannvesenet confirmed, and a locomotive fire at Etterstad was extinguished with no open flames. A derailed trailer of a Robel work vehicle caused delays on all T-bane lines in Oslo, according to Sporveien. A fault in Telia's mobile network led Bane Nor to cancel several train routes in Trøndelag due to safety concerns.

"It is too risky to run trains, because the signal system may show incorrectly," said Anna Langhammer, press contact at Bane Nor. She added that signal technicians were working on a safety cabinet with about 160,000 relay contacts. In Sweden, SJ announced that the Uppsala commuter train will be discontinued, affecting the Stockholm-Uppsala route.

A wheel crack was discovered on an X2000 train between Stockholm and Göteborg, leading to an emergency stop of 21 X2000 trains, SJ said. A signal failure between Årstaberg and Stockholm södra caused delays on all commuter train lines, according to SL. A switch error caused a stop on the red line of Stockholm's metro, with replacement buses set up.

A power line was torn down, causing train traffic problems to and from Göteborg central station, multiple reports said. A power failure at Brunnsparken stopped almost all tram lines in Göteborg, Västtrafik reported. A grass fire in the track area caused a stop in train traffic between Östra Grevie and Västra Ingelstad, Skånetrafiken said.

A torn overhead line between Nordmaling and Örnsköldsvik caused train cancellations, Norrtåg reported. In the UK, a major overhead cable failure at Manchester Piccadilly caused severe disruption, with many trains cancelled, National Rail reported. A derailed freight train near Bilbrook damaged overhead wires, causing disruption to multiple routes, West Midlands Railway said.

A casualty on the tracks near Burnage station caused line closures between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport, British Transport Police reported. A casualty on the tracks at Green Park station caused severe delays on the Jubilee Line, according to multiple reports. A radio system fault affected seven train companies in southern England, causing severe disruption, National Rail said.

A police incident at Birmingham's Northfield Railway Station caused all lines to be closed, with disruption expected all night, National Rail reported. Other international disruptions included a fire on a freight train near Warwick Farm in Sydney, which caused significant delays, NSW Transport reported. A cable break between Helsinki and Riihimäki caused train delays of 10-20 minutes, expected until morning, Fintraffic said.

A wildfire in northeast Florida caused Amtrak to cancel train service between Sanford and Lorton, Amtrak reported. A boom gate technical issue in the Operatunnelen in Oslo blocked one lane, causing queues, Vegtrafikksentralen said. The exact cause of the ground fault at Oslo S remains unknown, as does the cause of the wheel damage on the X2000 train.

The duration of the overhead cable failure at Manchester Piccadilly has not been confirmed.
