Paul Erhahiemen claims he experienced bullying, racist comments, and a culture of fear at RAF Brize Norton. He alleges a colleague used a hand gesture meaning 'black or painted face or skin' when referring to him to other staff members instead of using his name. Erhahiemen's experiences led to depression, paranoia, suicidal thoughts, and his medical discharge in May 2023.
He left RAF Brize Norton in November 2021 through 'premature voluntary release'. The Ministry of Defence is defending the case, saying Erhahiemen must prove any racist incidents occurred and that it took all reasonable steps to protect his mental health. Erhahiemen joined the army in June 2009 as a member of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, guarding Queen Elizabeth II.
He transferred to the Queen Alexandra Royal Army Nursing Corps in 2013 and was posted to RAF Brize Norton in September 2020 as a newly qualified forces mental health nurse.
