Milan prosecutors have launched an investigation through Interpol into false declarations surrounding the pardon, the prosecutors said. President Sergio Mattarella requested urgent clarification from the justice ministry, major media reported. Opposition politicians have called for the resignation of Justice Minister Carlo Nordio over the case.

According to Il Fatto Quotidiano, the child adopted by Minetti was not an orphan, as both parents were alive at the time of adoption and tried to prevent it. Magistrates reviewing the pardon did not request confirmation from Uruguay of the details provided by Minetti, reports said. Minetti's lawyer stated that the newspaper's claims were unfounded and damaging to her reputation. "The newspaper's claims about her pardon request were unfounded and seriously damaging to my personal and family reputation," Minetti said via her lawyer, according to a statement.
