Region Blekinge faces a significant change in emergency dental care as private dentists withdraw from the on-call service at the end of March. According to SVT Blekingenytt, the agreement between Region Blekinge and the Private Dentists Association (Privattandläkarföreningen) expires at the end of March, marking the second contract between the parties to end since the turn of the year.
Until a new agreement is in place, the entire responsibility for emergency dental care will fall on the public dental service, Folktandvården. Currently, private dentists handle approximately half of the emergency dental care in the region. The transition is expected to have consequences for regular dental services.
They need to prioritize this
"They need to prioritize this," said Nathalie Persson, purchasing manager for Region Blekinge, describing the situation as "very challenging."
The Private Dentists Association terminated the agreement at the end of last year, stating that the region has made it clear that future agreements should be with individual companies. Helena Alm of the Private Dentists Association expressed concern about the impact on patients, saying, "It means reduced accessibility for patients, of course. It's unfortunate."
