Pokémon card sales surge in Sweden, prices rise

Key Points
  • Pokémon card sales rose 276% last year on a major Swedish auction site.
  • Cards sold for 140 million kronor on Tradera in the past year.
  • A Linköping store reports high demand but warns against collecting for profit.

Interest in collecting and buying Pokémon cards is currently at a record high in Sweden. Sales increased by 276 percent last year on one of Sweden's largest auction sites. At a game store in Linköping, Arcade Dreams, staff notice the high interest, with a significant rise in sales of loose cards.

The increased demand has pushed up prices on popular cards. On the auction site Tradera, cards were sold for 140 million kronor last year. Rickard Gottfridsson, a store employee and collector, advises that collecting should be treated as a hobby, not as a way to make money, as very few people can earn large amounts from Pokémon cards.
