A man from Piteå has been detained on suspicion of aggravated rape that allegedly occurred in Luleå approximately seven years ago. According to reports from Piteå-Tidningen, prosecutor Rickard Finnberg requested the detention of the 65-year-old suspect during a hearing at Luleå District Court on Friday afternoon. The suspect was reportedly arrested by police earlier in the week.
A separate report from Kuriren indicates the suspect is 63 years old and was detained following a DNA match. The alleged rape was reported in 2019, but according to Kuriren, a breakthrough in the nearly seven-year-old case came after a DNA match was made when the man was tested for another crime. Prosecutor Moa Ejnestrand reportedly stated that the DNA evidence was crucial to the arrest.

The suspect, who lives in an apartment in central Piteå, was also charged with aggravated drunk driving in February of this year, though it remains unclear whether the rape suspicions emerged in connection with that case. Both sources indicate the detention hearing took place on Friday afternoon at Luleå District Court.
