Key Points
  • Philadelphia set a world record for the longest cheesesteak line at 1,200 feet
  • The event involved over 100 people and used 990 pounds of steak and 225 pounds of cheese
  • Cheesesteaks were distributed to unpaid TSA officials amid a partial government shutdown

Philadelphia has set a world record for the 'Longest Line of Cheesesteaks'. The record-breaking line was 1,200 feet long. The event took place at the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) across the B/C connectors.

The record was achieved on Tuesday. More than 100 employees and volunteers assembled the line. The line used 990 pounds of Philly's Best Steak and 225 pounds of cheese sauce.

The full line took about an hour to complete. Several airport restaurants helped, including Chickie's & Pete's, Geno's Steaks, Jim's South St Famous Cheesesteaks, Passyunk Steaks, and Tony Luke's. Guinness World Record official Michael Empric authenticated the event, confirming every roll was touching to qualify for the record.

After the record was recognized, the cheesesteaks were distributed to airport staff, including TSA officials. Many TSA officials have gone weeks without a paycheck due to the ongoing partial DHS shutdown that began last month. The airport has more restaurants serving cheesesteaks in a single location than anywhere else in the city.

The exact date of the Tuesday when the record was achieved has not been specified, and the total number of cheesesteaks in the 1,200-foot line remains unclear. It is also unknown how many TSA officials received cheesesteaks, the duration of the ongoing partial DHS shutdown, or whether this is the first world record for cheesesteaks set in Philadelphia.
