Key Points
  • 12 out of 20 cherry tomato varieties tested contain PFAS 'forever chemicals' according to Råd & Rön's investigation.
  • The affected products include Daily Greens Trio Mix, Duroc Triomix, and Ica cherry tomatoes, with most imported from North Africa.
  • Despite the findings, the PFAS levels do not exceed EU safety limits, and 7 varieties showed no pesticide residues.

A majority of cherry tomatoes sold in Swedish grocery stores contain PFAS chemicals, according to a new investigation by consumer magazine Råd & Rön. The tests examined 20 different varieties of cherry tomatoes from major food chains, with 12 of them showing residues from pesticides classified as PFAS. These 'forever chemicals' are slow to break down and can accumulate in both the environment and the human body.

The products with the highest PFAS content were Daily Greens Trio Mix, Duroc Triomix, and Ica's cherry tomatoes, all containing multiple PFAS-classified substances. Most of the affected tomatoes were imported from Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt, though European and Swedish tomatoes were also included in the tests. ' Despite the findings, the levels of pesticides detected do not exceed any of the EU's limit values.

We think it really stands out and is noteworthy that a whole lot are PFAS-classified.
