Peta wrote to council leader Dan Harrison urging him to choose Vegan Pie Way instead, offering to cover the cost of new road signs. The charity said the name would keep a nod to local heritage while promoting compassion. Harrison dismissed the proposal as 'ridiculous' and 'farcical', according to BBC News - England.
The 4.4-mile (7.1km) road, currently known as the North and East Melton Mowbray Distributor Road, is the largest highways scheme the council has ever undertaken. It aims to reduce congestion and pollution in the town centre and includes new cycling and walking routes. The final cost is expected to be about £134m, nearly double the original budget.
The council ran a public vote to decide the name, which closed at midnight on Tuesday. The shortlist, drawn up with local politicians and community representatives, includes Pork Pie Way, River Eye Road, Wreake Road, Lazars Way, Wolds Way, Farrier Way, Victory Road, Military Way, and Veteran Road. The new name is expected to be announced at an opening ceremony later in May.
