Perseverance rover takes selfie beyond Jezero Crater
Key Points
  • Perseverance took a selfie on March 11, 2026, during its deepest push west beyond Jezero Crater.
  • The selfie shows the rover at the 'Arethusa' outcrop after creating an abrasion patch.
  • The image is composed of 61 images from the WATSON camera, part of the SHERLOC instrument.

The selfie is composed of 61 individual images taken by the WATSON camera on the end of the rover’s robotic arm. WATSON is part of the SHERLOC instrument, built by Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) in San Diego and operated jointly by MSSS and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). JPL, managed for the agency by Caltech, built and manages operations of the Perseverance rover.

Specific scientific findings from the abrasion patch have not been disclosed, and the exact geological significance of the rover's location remains unclear. Next planned activities for Perseverance after this selfie have not been announced.
