Peak District to introduce red routes to curb parking chaos
Key Points
  • Red routes with double red lines will be introduced after May 5 in the Peak District.
  • Paid parking and time limits will apply on Buxton Road and Old Mam Tor Road.
  • Some areas will remain free, and the council aims to balance accessibility with community protection.

Work to install the new lines and signs is due to begin next week. At the lower end of Old Mam Tor Road, drivers will have to pay by phone only. Two new solar-powered ticket machines will be installed on Buxton Road from July.

The bays on Buxton Road will have a four-hour maximum stay, with no return within one hour. Charges on Buxton Road will apply between 9am and 5pm daily; outside those hours, parking will remain unrestricted. The 55 spaces at the far end of Old Mam Tor Road will remain free at all times.

With these measures we have listened carefully and tried to balance the needs of local people, business and visitors to this beautiful part of our county.

Unmarked lay-bys along nearby routes will remain unrestricted. Derbyshire County Council said the aim is to strike a balance between keeping the area accessible and protecting local communities from disruption. " The specific fines for violating the red routes have not been confirmed, nor has the exact start date for installation work.

It remains unclear how the council will enforce the new restrictions and how local businesses will be affected.

It's essential residents can rely on emergency and other services to reach them no matter the time of day, which can be difficult when people have double-parked or blocked driveways.

At the same time, we want to encourage sustainable visitor numbers, reduce congestion and deliver the best outcome to what is one of the most highly visited and outstanding areas in Derbyshire.
