Key Points
  • Paulie Malignaggi beat Tyler Goodjohn in a bare-knuckle fight but suffered severe cuts and fractured ribs.
  • He waited nearly nine hours at Leeds General Hospital for treatment and criticized the NHS staff.
  • Malignaggi claimed his cuts became infected due to poor treatment, while the NHS apologized and cited clinical prioritization.

Paulie Malignaggi, the former world champion boxer, was left with two severe cuts above his eyes and multiple fractured ribs after beating Tyler Goodjohn in a five-round bout at BKB 47 last October, according to multiple reports. Following the fight, he was taken to Leeds General Hospital, where he spent nearly nine hours waiting for treatment, as reported by major media outlets. During the wait, Malignaggi posted a video from the hospital complaining about the delay in receiving stitches.

According to Metro - Main, Malignaggi described NHS staff as 'inept animals' and claimed he would have received better post-fight treatment in the United States. He said that in America, the cuts would have been stitched up quickly, but in the UK, he felt the care was substandard. Malignaggi also stated that the hospital was almost completely empty and that staff were gossiping while he waited with blood dripping down his face.

Malignaggi further claimed that one of his cuts became constantly infected and pussed out until a few weeks ago due to poor treatment, according to Metro - Main. He said the wound is now closed but expects it to reopen during fights. A spokesperson for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust apologized for the wait, stating that patients are prioritized based on clinical need.

The spokesperson added that they would be happy to discuss his complaint further if he contacted them.
