Region Östergötland is experiencing a critical shortage of blood donors as the Easter holiday approaches, with blood banks reporting alarmingly low supplies. According to local reports, the region needs 16,000 registered blood donors to avoid frequent shortages but is currently missing over 2,000 donors.
Karin Hedberg, blood donor coordinator for GeBlod in Östergötland, warned that blood supplies are currently low, with some blood groups at critically low levels. "Right now, blood supplies are low, and in some blood groups really low," Hedberg stated. The most affected blood types include O-negative, B-positive, and AB-negative.

The upcoming holiday weekend with multiple public holidays is expected to worsen the blood shortage situation. Blood bank staff in Linköping are reportedly sending text messages and calling donors with the needed blood types in an effort to increase donations before the holiday period.
Hedberg emphasized that her team is doing everything possible to attract blood donors to address the shortage. The situation highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining adequate blood supplies in the region, particularly during holiday periods when regular donation patterns are disrupted.
