According to multiple reports, Olausson played one season in the Canadian junior league OHL before signing with the Colorado Avalanche. He spent most of his time in the AHL, appearing in over 200 games, and made four NHL appearances. Before this season, he moved to the Minnesota organization but did not break into the NHL.

Olausson previously played for HV71, where he attended hockey high school and played 16 SHL games. He also won a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships. Frölunda's sports director Fredrik Sjöström compared Olausson to Filip Cederqvist, describing him as an offensively skilled player with good size, shot, and skating. Olausson said he was attracted by Frölunda's reputation for developing players and that the move felt right.
