The political majority in Örebro municipality is now in close combat with the parking issue as the election approaches this fall, with both residents and visitors having problems finding parking spaces. To solve the shortage of parking spaces centrally, the solution they have come up with is to use the unused capacity in the parking garages. When the municipality measured the number of empty parking spaces in Örebro's parking garages on Black Friday, when retail traditionally attracts many visitors, there were 700 unused parking spaces.
To achieve their goal, they are introducing an electronic sign system for those looking for parking in central Örebro where motorists are directed to the parking garages where there are available spaces, and they also plan to introduce their own parking app to replace all other parking apps currently offered by different parking companies. The municipality is wavering on the parking issue, as recently, for example, it removed residential parking in the Eyra area but reintroduced it after a few months because they believed they had made a misjudgment. The situation for those who lack residential parking is something the municipality does not want to comment on at present, other than that they hope more residents will be able to park near where they live if more park in parking garages instead of on the street.
The measures are to be implemented by the turn of the year if there is no change of power in the city hall and the issue is paused.
