Örebro Implements Automated Waste Fee System Starting March 1

Key Points
  • New automated waste disposal rules take effect in Örebro on March 1, 2026.
  • Sensors will scan license plates at recycling centers instead of manual registration.
  • The system aims to ensure businesses pay required waste disposal fees that were previously being avoided.

Starting March 1, 2026, businesses and organizations in Örebro will face new automated waste disposal rules at municipal recycling centers. According to SVT Örebro, sensors will automatically scan license plates of vehicles entering recycling facilities, replacing the previous system where businesses manually registered visits using activity cards. The new system will automatically invoice companies based on data from the Swedish Transport Agency's register of business-registered vehicles.

Lisa Karlsson, a planner at Örebro municipality's waste unit, explained the change was necessary because many businesses were not using their activity cards and therefore not paying the required fees. 'We have seen that many for various reasons do not use their cards and thus do not pay the fee. Therefore we need to change the system,' Karlsson stated.

We have seen that many, for various reasons, do not swipe their cards and therefore do not pay the fee. That's why we need to change the system.

The automated registration aims to ensure all businesses pay their waste disposal fees properly.

However, Karlsson noted that visits exceeding ten times per year will be subject to verification.
