A new ventilation tower is being built at Järntorgsmotet, where the Götatunneln emerges in the west, with its main task to lead away exhaust fumes from the tunnel to improve air quality in the area. The tower will also indirectly contribute to reduced noise levels. The tower is about 24 meters high and features a design that ties to the area's maritime history, resembling a sail on a mast with aluminum plates shaped like fish scales.
The concept was developed in collaboration with the Gothenburg-based artist Pål Svensson, and the tower is tilted and cone-shaped, with aluminum plates being mounted on the outside. This ventilation is necessary for Gothenburg City to build the new Järnvågsparken on top of the tunnel, with the park expected to be completed by 2030. The tower's fans are controlled based on traffic volume, running at low speed at night.
According to Aftonbladet, the project has a completion deadline of the end of May, but it looks like it will be finished before then. It remains unknown how much air pollution and noise levels will actually decrease due to the tower, and what the total cost of building the ventilation tower and Järnvågsparken is.
