New Slussen bike and pedestrian bridge arrives in Stockholm
Key Points
  • The bridge is 220 meters long and 8.5 meters wide.
  • It is expected to arrive in Stockholm next week after transport from Poland.
  • Once completed in early 2027, it will serve about 18,000 cyclists daily.

A new 220-meter-long and eight-and-a-half-meter-wide bike and pedestrian bridge for Slussen is being transported by boat from Poland to Stockholm and is expected to arrive next week. The bridge is planned to be transported today, but the weather will determine the timing, according to Magnus Tengblad, construction leader and coordinator for the Slussen project in Stockholm City. After arrival, extensive assembly work will begin.

The bridge will be transported in six parts to Frihamnen, then moved to the Slussen area where it will be mounted on four bridge pillars with a land foundation on each side. This work is expected to take about six weeks and requires precision with details. Once the new bike connection between Slussen and Gamla stan is completed in early 2027, it is expected to be used by around 18,000 cyclists daily.

However, much work remains after the bridge is in place, meaning it can be inaugurated at the earliest in the beginning of next year.
