Norwegians turn silver spoons into bunad scarf rings

LifestyleLifestyle
Key Points
  • Silk scarves and scarf rings are trending accessories for bunader.
  • Many repurpose old silver spoons into scarf rings, with goldsmiths seeing demand.
  • New silver rings are also popular, especially for men's bunader.

Heidi Bull from Tinn had a goldsmith convert the handle of an old silver spoon into a scarf ring, costing 700 kroner. According to NRK Vestfold og Telemark, Bull described it as something new that not everyone else has. The spoon was inherited from great-grandparents who received it as a wedding gift in 1912. Goldsmith Ragnar Rønning in Tønsberg prefers to shape the handle of teaspoons or child spoons into rings to avoid them being too heavy. According to NRK Vestfold og Telemark, Cathrine Rønning noted that the spoon should ideally be 100% silver, not silver-plated, as hammering on silver-plating may cause the plating to come off. Herman Rønning said transforming silverware into jewelry and bunad accessories requires some work but is good reuse.

Brand new silver rings are also popular for bunader, especially for men's bunader which have fewer accessories, according to Bjørg Gaulin. Gaulin has sewn bunader for 40 years and is busy before May holidays and confirmations. She ordered Norwegian-produced scarf rings around Christmas but they only arrived recently due to high demand. According to NRK Vestfold og Telemark, Gaulin described the scarf ring as a nice addition that keeps the scarf neatly in place.

The point is that it shouldn't become too heavy, so it doesn't sag too much on the scarf.

Camilla Rossing, head of the Norwegian Institute for Bunad and Folk Costume, said the scarf ring is not part of any local costume tradition but a new product. According to NRK Vestfold og Telemark, Rossing finds it creative that many have scarf rings made from old silver teaspoons, but notes there is no tradition for it.

Then you're hammering on a silver plating that is a layer on the outside. Then it might come off.

It's nice with a new addition to bunader, not least for men's bunader which don't have much extra to get.

There were long queues to order, a big rush.

When you tie a silk scarf on the bunad, it's often more or less successful. But a dedicated ring keeps the scarf more neatly in place, so it doesn't creep up all over.
