Norwegian hearing to consider scrapping Health Platform

PoliticsPolitics
Key Points
  • Hearing on Tuesday to discuss Green Party proposal to scrap Health Platform
  • Scrapping could cost up to 14.2 billion kroner
  • System criticized by doctors, nurses, and Auditor General

The Health Platform was first introduced at St. Olav's Hospital in Trondheim in 2022 and has since been adopted by 34 municipalities and health trusts in Central Norway. Many doctors and nurses have been critical of the system, and the Office of the Auditor General has previously pointed out that it is unintuitive, complex, and time-consuming. The Green Party proposed scrapping the system in early March.

Several parties have opposed the proposal, including the health trusts that purchased the expensive IT system. Jan Frich, CEO of Central Norway Regional Health Authority, has described the proposal as challenging. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre have stated they do not want to scrap the system. During Tuesday's hearing, stakeholders including Central Norway Regional Health Authority, the Health Platform, trade unions, and the Norwegian Medical Association will speak. According to NRK Møre og Romsdal, Green Party MP and doctor Marius Langballe Dalin described the system as an "IT tumor."
