The multimillion-pound Milburngate development in Durham remains unfinished, according to reports. The £120m scheme comprises offices, housing, bars and restaurants, a cinema and a hotel, as detailed in project plans. The development was first unveiled a decade ago as a key scheme designed to become a vibrant place to live, work and relax, based on initial announcements.
Work stalled when Durham-based property developer Arlington Real Estate, which had been driving the development, ran into issues involving fire safety and other matters, which have stopped the scheme from being completed, as stated by sources. The development hit the buffers in 2023 when contractor Tolent tumbled into administration, according to industry reports. Durham County Council acquired the development for around £55m to secure its future as a leisure and hospitality hub, as confirmed by council statements.
Manchester development venture Northhold Group has snapped up the site for an undisclosed sum, the company announced. Work to complete the highly anticipated project is expected to start in the next few months, Northhold Group indicated. The development includes a new boutique cinema, a collection of high-end restaurants and bars, a hotel, office space, and 153 built-to-rent apartments, as outlined in development plans.
Milburngate has been seen as a key development within the council’s plans for the creation of an Innovation District, which would include the Aykley Heads site, Durham University’s Business School and Data Centre, according to council documents. Northhold Group said, 'We are excited to move forward and bring this landmark development to completion. ' The group added, 'Beyond entertainment and hospitality, the development addresses Durham’s growing demand for quality urban living and workspace.
