The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has finalized the railway line proposal for the Norrbotniabanan project through central Piteå, according to reports from Piteå-Tidningen and an official press release from Region Norrbotten. The announcement was made on April 8, 2026. The selected route will serve as the basis for further planning on the section between Munksund and Öjebyn.
A travel center will reportedly be located at the fire station, and a freight yard is planned on southern Pitholm. Project leader Pär Fleuron stated that this route best meets the project's goals, contributing to smoother transport, safer traffic solutions, lower costs, and reduced climate impact through decreased mass transport. The decision follows a consultation in March 2025 where multiple route proposals were presented, and feedback from residents and organizations was incorporated.

Trafikverket will now begin detailed planning, including investigations into noise reduction, passages over and under the railway, and minimizing impacts on people and the environment. An open house event is scheduled for April 14 in central Piteå to provide more information.
