The municipality of Norberg acquired four of the five apartment buildings in Kärrgruvan at the end of 2024, according to officials. The purpose of the acquisition was to demolish the buildings to avoid so-called social dumping, officials said. The buildings have been empty for just over a year, and they contained environmentally hazardous substances, according to Kristiina Pousar, a technical strategist at Norberg Municipality.
According to SVT Västmanland, Kristiina Pousar described the presence of many different types of environmental toxins as unfortunate, though the specific types and quantities remain unclear. The demolition project, valued at around 20 million kronor, will be addressed in the Norberg municipal council in May, officials confirmed. The demolition will be procured, but when the actual demolition can begin is still unclear, officials said.
I am not surprised that the houses contained environmentally hazardous substances, but it is really unfortunate that there were so many different types of environmental toxins.
According to SVT Västmanland, Johanna Odö, a municipal councilor from the Social Democratic Party, described a hope for the demolition to occur within the year, pending bids, and expressed optimism that the site might flourish afterward. The exact cost breakdown of the 20-million-kronor project and specific plans for the site after demolition to prevent social dumping are not yet detailed.
I would wish that it was done on this side of the year, but I cannot decide that, instead we have to see if we get any bids.
Hopefully, maybe it will flourish here.
