René Redzepi, the celebrated founder of Copenhagen's world-renowned Noma restaurant, faces serious allegations of workplace violence and humiliation from former employees. According to reports from Svenska Dagbladet, former staff members have accused the star chef of physical abuse and degrading behavior in the restaurant's kitchen.
The allegations describe disturbing incidents, including one where Redzepi reportedly crouched under kitchen counters during service and stabbed employees in the legs with various tools, including a grill fork. In another alleged incident, Redzepi is said to have pushed a female employee against a metal counter for using her mobile phone to adjust music volume, causing her to bleed. The employee reportedly lay crying on the floor before returning to complete her shift.
I became the chef I promised myself I would never become.
Redzepi has reportedly apologized for his behavior, stating, 'I became the chef I promised myself I would never become.' The allegations have surfaced amid growing scrutiny of workplace conditions in high-pressure restaurant environments. Noma, which has been named the world's best restaurant multiple times, has built its reputation on innovative Nordic cuisine but now faces questions about its internal culture.
