Newroz Celebrated at Medborgarplatsen Despite Security Concerns

A Newroz celebration marking the Persian, Kurdish, and Afghan new year took place at Medborgarplatsen in Stockholm on Saturday, according to SVT Stockholm. The event was organized by Swedish-Kurdish social commentator Kurdo Baksi, who stated it was "more important than ever" to celebrate the holiday despite security concerns related to the Middle East conflict.

While several other Newroz events across Sweden were reportedly cancelled due to the war in the Middle East, Baksi proceeded with the gathering at Medborgarplatsen. "We should not let the evil forces defeat us," Baksi was quoted as saying. "It is even more important than ever to celebrate Newroz to stand against all unpleasant news."

Stockholm Police and Säpo reportedly noted increased threats against opposition figures from Iran since the outbreak of war, leading to security concerns. The traditional large celebration in Kungsträdgården was replaced with a digital concert this year due to the security situation.

Newroz, a non-religious holiday marking the arrival of spring, is celebrated annually on the vernal equinox by Kurds, Afghans, and Persians worldwide. Despite the challenging circumstances, participants gathered at Medborgarplatsen to observe the tradition.
