New Stork Platforms Installed in Fågeltofta to Aid Nesting Birds
Key Points
  • Two stork platforms replaced a deteriorating stump in Fågeltofta to support nesting birds.
  • The upgrade improves safety by placing platforms further from the road and uses environmental funds.
  • Storks are showing interest, with monitoring ongoing to assess the platforms' impact.

A pair of storks lived for several years on a high stump in Kronovallallén in Fågeltofta. When the stump was removed, two platforms were built instead: one for the regular storks and one to invite new arrivals. Trafikverket manages and preserves avenues along state roads.

The Stork Project in Skåne contacted Trafikverket a few years ago to ask about setting up a platform in the avenue. ' A platform was set up on a high stump, and soon a pair of storks made themselves at home. When the stump began to deteriorate and the number of storks in the area turned out to be greater, a decision was made to upgrade.

It is laid out as deadwood nearby and will function as a home for insects and small animals. We try to think the whole chain in our measures.

Eva Ditlevsen, Environmental specialist at Trafikverket

Ditlevsen added, 'Now there will be two platforms, one that stands on the church's land and one where Trafikverket has road rights. ' Storks have already started to show interest in the new platforms. Ditlevsen noted, 'The latest news is that the storks seem to have found the platform after trying to build a nest without success in a tree next to their 'old' site.

' The platforms are financed by earmarked funds to be used for targeted environmental measures. The purpose of the funds is to ensure a quality and efficiency improvement regarding biological diversity in Trafikverket's facilities. The same pot of money was used in 2024 to restore Kronovallsallén, where the stone wall was renovated and 88 new trees were planted.

The removed high stump was laid out as deadwood nearby and will serve as a home for insects and small animals.
