Netflix's 'Thrash' Premieres Amid Shark Film Rivalry
Key Points
  • Netflix's 'Thrash' premieres April 10 after rights sale from Sony Pictures
  • The film's inspiration came from extreme weather and global warming themes
  • Director Tommy Wirkola has multiple upcoming projects including a 'Violent Night' sequel

The film, previously titled 'Shiver', 'Beneath the Storm', and originally 'The Rising', has undergone multiple name changes. The idea for 'Thrash' emerged from a world marked by increasingly extreme weather and global warming, with filming taking place in Australia during the Australian winter. Director Tommy Wirkola from Alta both directed and wrote the screenplay for 'Thrash'.

In the film, Phoebe Dynevor's character is nine months pregnant. After filming 'Thrash', Wirkola directed the sequel to 'Violent Night', which has a planned cinema premiere on December 4 this year. He will also start filming a new project in collaboration with actor Josh Hartnett during the year.

Now I just call it 'the shark film' when I talk to people, because it has had so many titles. It was called 'Shiver' before 'Thrash'. Before that, it was called 'Beneath the Storm', and before 'Beneath the Storm', the original title was 'The Rising'.

In a competing shark film development, Finnish director Renny Harlin has a new project called 'Deep Water' in the works. The plot follows a group of people who, after a plane crash in the Pacific Ocean, are forced to fight for survival against both nature and hungry sharks. The cast includes Aaron Eckhart, Ben Kingsley, and Swedish Kelly Gale.

The US premiere of 'Deep Water' is in May, but it is currently unknown when or if the film will be shown in Sweden.

It has punch, definitely.

I became completely obsessed with sharks after 'Jaws' – and 'Jaws 2', which is an underrated film.

Tommy Wirkola, Director

I spent much of my childhood being preoccupied with sharks and all the films about them.

Tommy Wirkola, Director

When you see how the world is going a bit off the rails with global warming and floods happening everywhere, it struck me that this could be a perfect starting point for a film. I wanted to combine the scale of a disaster film with the tension from a shark thriller.

But the nice and fun thing about it was that the film crew was in the water with us. They were in wetsuits, so everyone was wet. It really felt like a team effort because everyone was uncomfortable, not just the actors.

Phoebe Dynevor, Actress

Mom just has to fight some damn sharks.

It's one of those lines that can either be really tough or completely terrible. So you just have to give it your all and hope it hits. But when we filmed it, it was a lot of fun. I've always wanted to be in a film like this, and I've never had the chance before now. So that line was definitely the cherry on top.
