The GMB union reported that Nestle could cut as many as 450 jobs across the UK, with the BBC stating that at least 120 jobs could be impacted in York. According to Daily Express - UK News, Deanne Ferguson, senior organiser for GMB North East, described the impact in York as "huge." Charlotte Brumpton-Childs, GMB National Secretary, told the same outlet that the job cuts would "rip the heart out of communities" and that Nestle workers have faced years of uncertainty.
The UK cuts are part of a larger global restructuring announced by Nestle in October last year, which involves 16,000 job cuts worldwide. The global cuts are expected to include around 12,000 white-collar professionals and aim to save the company approximately one billion Swiss francs (£940 million) annually by the end of 2027.
The impact in York would be huge.
Nestle operates factories in York, Gatwick, Halifax, Tutbury, Dalston, and Staverton. The York factory produces KitKats, while Nescafé is made in Derbyshire and Cumbria, and Quality Street is produced in Halifax. A Nestle spokesperson said the company will manage any changes in consultation with employees and will share proposed changes with those affected first, adding that there is no further update at this time.
It remains unclear which specific UK sites will be affected by the 450 job cuts, how many will be voluntary versus compulsory, and what the timeline for the cuts will be. The relationship between the UK cuts and the previously announced global cuts has not been confirmed.
These job cuts will rip the heart out of communities. Nestle workers – who make some of the UK's best loved treats – have already put up with years of uncertainty and job losses.
