NATO Baltic naval command may move to Karlskrona

Key Points
  • NATO's Baltic naval command could relocate from Germany to Karlskrona by 2030.
  • The move is a Swedish initiative requiring NATO political approval.
  • The staff of about 200 would include officers from multiple NATO countries.

From 2030, NATO's naval forces in the Baltic Sea could be led from Karlskrona, Sweden. The initiative comes from Sweden, but it requires a political decision and agreement within NATO, according to press officer Jimmie Adamsson. The staff that leads and coordinates NATO's naval operations in the Baltic Sea area is currently based in Rostock, Germany.

Plans are being made from the Swedish side for the staff of about 200 people to instead be located in Karlskrona. The base would be manned by NATO member countries, especially those around the Baltic Sea, so it would not only be Swedish officers. Sweden, as a NATO country, wants to take much responsibility and is part of the solution to security in the area, with good control over the Baltic Sea.
