Key Points
  • Nalin Baksi blames left and right for enabling Islamism in Sweden through political naivety and policies.
  • This highlights internal political debates on immigration and extremism in Sweden.
  • Baksi continues to influence through writing after leaving politics due to threats.

' According to Baksi, the left did not want to see the problem or, out of fear of contact, criticize Islamists, and Islamists used this reluctance. She adds that Islamists hijacked anti-racism. Baksi claims that politics in general has long and naively given support to Islamists, allowing them to advance their positions and portray society as a threat among immigrant Muslims.

She specifically mentions that former Prime Ministers Göran Persson and Fredrik Reinfeldt showed naivety regarding Islamism. ' She also cites satellite dishes, independent schools, and organized crime, combined with immigrant parents' weak position relative to their children, as significant for the spread of radical Islamism. However, the specific policies from the right that financed Islamists and how the left gave political legitimacy remain unclear.

Both the left and the right bear responsibility for the rise of Islamism in Sweden.

' For her, Islam is tolerance, love, and flexibility, while Islamism is an ideology that wants to limit people's freedom, especially women's freedom. Baksi comes from a politically engaged family with several imams who for centuries in Turkey opposed fanatical literal interpretations of Islam. She was often accused of serving racists' interests, and hate and threats from Islamists and their defenders made her leave politics in 2011.

After losing the chair election in the Social Democratic Women's Association, Baksi now believes she influences more by writing than through politics and has columns in several newspapers.

The left gave them political legitimacy in the name of anti-racism and the right has financed them with its policies.
