Multiple Landslides Close Roads Across Norway, Including Major E6 Blockage

Accidents & disastersAccidents
Key Points
  • Major rock slide closes E6 at Rosten, requiring blasting and causing road closure.
  • Multiple other landslides block roads in Levanger, Osterøy, Åsneset, Åfjord, Orkland, and Skaun.
  • No serious injuries reported, but cleanup and assessments ongoing with geologists involved.

A rock slide occurred on the E6 at Rosten in Sel municipality in Gudbrandsdalen, leading to the closure of the road. According to Anne Grethe Hestenes, a senior engineer at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, a rock detached from about 100 meters up in the terrain and took vegetation down with it, with a width of about 10 meters, and a rock block of about one cubic meter lying in the roadway that must be blasted away. No persons were injured in the slide, but it caused minor material damage to the first vehicle that arrived at the scene. It is not yet known when the E6 at Rosten will be reopened after the rock slide.

In recent years, there have been several landslides along the E6 at Rosten in Sel municipality. In April 2025, several large rock blocks slid down at two different places on the E6 in a short time, and the E6 was closed for several days then.

Another rock slide affected the E6 in Levanger, with stones sliding down onto the southbound lane at Ner-Tingstad, between the shopping center Alti Magneten and Okkenhaugkrysset. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has called out a contractor to clear the E6 in Levanger after a report of a small slide in the morning hours.

A large landslide occurred overnight to Monday, blocking county road 5418 Bruvikvegen at Skaftå in Osterøy. The landslide is about 20 meters wide, with no damage to houses or buildings, and no indication that anyone was caught in the slide. A geologist has been on site and assessed that it is defensible to start cleanup work after the landslide, according to Roger Lemme, a construction manager in Vestland county municipality. The road will not be opened today, and a new assessment will be made on Tuesday at 09:00.

After the Osterøy landslide, the effectiveness of catch fences was discussed, with the landslide going through the catch fence. Roger Lemme noted that the catch fence still has an important function, securing traffic in 60–80 percent of cases.

A small rock slide occurred over Saudavegen at Åsneset, on the Suldal side of the road between Ropeid and Sauda. The stones block one driving lane, and police are on site to secure traffic until a contractor arrives to remove the stones.

A rock ended up on the road on county road 175 at Vikvatnet in Åfjord, affecting only one driving lane, and a contractor is on the way to clear the road.

A landslide with stones and loose masses occurred on Wednesday evening on Gangåsveien in Orkland, closing a stretch of about 100 meters. The landslide is 10 meters wide with about 40 cubic meters that slid out, and the rock is unstable.

Large stones slid out onto the road on county road 800 Viggjavegen, just south of Storsandan in Skaun, closing the road to traffic. Police received the report at 06:11, and the road will remain closed at least through the morning, with a geologist needed before an opening assessment, according to Runar Kvalshaug at the Road Traffic Center.
