Sir Edward Leigh has been campaigning for a direct London-Grimsby rail service for years. Additional funding would be necessary to support a new stopping pattern along the proposed London-Grimsby railway line. Significant upgrades would be needed at Market Rasen station for LNER services to include a stop there. Grimsby is approximately 230 miles from central London. LNER has been in public ownership since 2018. The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) is yet to rule on an application by Grand Central to run trains between King's Cross and Cleethorpes via Grimsby. Transport minister Keir Mather stated that the ORR is operationally independent.
Separately, the London Assembly Environment Committee wrote to the Secretary of State for Transport about Heathrow airport expansion proposals. The committee's letter calls for the Airports National Policy Statement to include targets for noise impacts, no additional air quality impacts, and progressively tighter emissions standards. The committee fears Heathrow expansion would expose more Londoners to harmful aircraft noise, undermine air quality progress, and undermine climate goals. Transport for London (TfL) published a Walking Action Plan in 2018 with a target to increase daily walking trips to 7.5 million by 2024. The number of walking trips in London has plateaued for the last seven years, with little to no progress toward TfL's 2024 target.
The London Assembly Transport Committee published a report titled 'Quality streets: improving London’s pavements' with recommendations to improve walkability. The committee also wrote to the Secretary of State for Transport supporting London TravelWatch's proposed amendment to the Railways Bill to add it as a statutory consultee. Additionally, the committee wrote to the Secretary of State for Transport regarding TfL's plans to seek devolution of Great Northern inner services from Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage.
