MPs debate £39bn Parliament restoration plan
Key Points
  • Parliament restoration cost estimates range from £11.1bn to £39.2bn
  • Two options: full decant for 24 years (£15.6bn) or Lords-only move for 61 years (£39bn)
  • Current maintenance costs £1.5m per week

Two main options are under consideration. 6 billion. A second option involves moving only the House of Lords out, taking 61 years and costing £39 billion.

5 million a week to maintain, according to project officials. The project team warned that delaying restoration would lead to what they described as an expensive managed decline of the Palace. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticized the restoration as out of control and a basket case white elephant project.

Dr Simon Thurley, chair of the delivery authority, defended the plan, noting that £150 million a year is already spent on maintenance. The Norman Shaw North building refurbishment budget increased by £10 million due to fire safety works, double the worst-case scenario from eight months ago. 6 million for a glass roof over a courtyard.

The cross-party Finance Committee voiced serious concerns about cost increases. House of Commons Clerk Tom Goldsmith admitted the initial worst-case estimate was inaccurate, and significantly so.
