A yellow weather warning for wind in Cumbria is in effect from 14:00 BST through to Sunday, according to weather authorities. The Mountain Weather Information Service warns gusts could blow people over even at mid-heights and predicts gusts of 70-80mph on higher fells. Keswick Mountain Rescue Team warned conditions on the fells would be challenging and potentially dangerous.
Richard Warren from Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team said his colleagues had a pretty horrendous night on Thursday rescuing two teenagers and a couple in two mammoth rescues near Scafell Pike. Two calls came through at about 20:00 on Thursday for rescues near Scafell Pike. The first rescue involved 24 volunteers from three teams helping two teenagers who had got lost on Scafell Pike.
The second rescue involved a young couple who were lost and stuck in snow near the same summit, with 27 team members out early in the morning. A helicopter was called in from Prestwick in Ayrshire but had to turn back because of weather conditions. In Norway, two 17-year-olds, a girl and a boy, were rescued after becoming weather-stranded on the summit Sveningen in Os in Bjørnafjorden, Vestland, around 18:30, as reported by rescue sources.
There was a lot of snow and fog on the summit. A rescue operation was initiated, with representatives from the Red Cross assisting, and the 17-year-olds were safely down and taken care of by family just after 4:00 at night to Sunday. Separately, three youths are stuck in a mountain ledge on the mountain Eggene in Nordfjordeid in Stad after sliding down on snow during a hike, and a rescue helicopter is on its way, according to authorities.
The three cannot get up or down but are all conscious, and the plan is to lift the youths out of the mountain with a helicopter. Additionally, two tourists on a mountain hike received assistance in the Preikestolen area. Volunteer crew got the two down safely around 01:23.
It was dark and the tourists were tired and cold, and they had access to an emergency hut. The police received the report at 20:30. The current status and outcome of the rescue operation for the three youths stuck on Eggene mountain remains unclear, as do the specific injuries or medical conditions of all rescued individuals.
