The mother of a murdered woman in Lessebo, Sweden, has been granted over 450,000 kronor in compensation for suffering after being deprived of liberty for ten months. The decision comes from the Chancellor of Justice. The young woman was found murdered and burned in a shelter in May 2024, with the murder assessed to have occurred in an honor context.
Her father and brother were later convicted of murder. The mother was also prosecuted, suspected of complicity in murder and gross violation of a grave, and was detained between May 2024 and March 2025, but was acquitted in both district court and court of appeal. The courts found insufficient evidence that she participated in planning or carrying out the murder or attempts to burn the body.
The Chancellor of Justice assessed that her suffering during the deprivation of liberty was more extensive than what is normally considered to follow from detention, leading to the increased compensation.
