Smaller UK Mobile Providers Outperform Big Four in Survey

The survey found that Three, O2, and Lycamobile received the lowest overall customer scores at 65%, 67%, and 68% respectively. Three was rated with two stars in every category, including network reliability and technical support, while O2 received two stars for value for money and customer service. Lycamobile achieved four stars for value for money but two stars in all other categories.

In contrast, Talkmobile led the rankings with a score of 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile at 81%. Giffgaff and Smarty both scored 79%, and Lebara and 1p Mobile achieved 78%. Talkmobile, Giffgaff, Smarty, 1p Mobile, and Lebara received Which?

Recommended Provider status. EE and Vodafone, part of the Big Four, scored 74% and 72% respectively. Cost comparisons revealed significant savings potential.

Survey respondents using one of the Big Four paid an average of £16 for a SIM-only contract, compared with just £9 on smaller networks, and for contracts that include a phone, the average cost was £40 with the Big Four versus £28 with smaller providers. Many smaller firms 'piggyback' on bigger networks, meaning that customers get the same signal and coverage. Which?

research shows some customers can save hundreds of pounds by switching to smaller providers. For example, one Which? member left O2 after her monthly bill crept up from £17 to £27 and switched to an £8 Smarty deal, saving £200 a year.
