ITV noted that the long-running programme, which debuted in 1998, has previously minted only six millionaires, making a seventh winner particularly notable. According to ITV, the latest series has indeed produced that elusive seventh jackpot winner. In a historic first for the show, the broadcaster also confirmed that two contestants in this series reached the ultimate £1 million question, leaving viewers to wonder whether both managed to walk away with the top prize.
The identity of this latest winner, however, is being kept a closely guarded secret until the episode transmits, ITV said. ITV added that the winner has been sworn to silence and cannot reveal their success to anyone before the broadcast. ITV confirmed that due to compliance regulations, no contestant is allowed to collect their prize money until after their episode has aired, meaning the new millionaire will also have to wait to access their fortune.
The opening episode will see a contestant named Roman tackle the nerve-wracking million-pound question with two lifelines still at his disposal, including the 50:50 option to remove half the wrong answers, according to ITV. Producers have confirmed that at least one person will win the £1 million prize in this series, ensuring a dramatic payoff. However, an official air date for the new series has not yet been announced by the broadcaster.
Elsewhere in the series, one contestant experienced a devastating £186,000 loss in a single moment, which ITV described as one of the largest drops in the programme's history. The sudden fall came after a wrong answer at a pivotal stage, underscoring the immense pressure of the game. ITV recalled that last year, Nicholas Bennett captured national attention when he answered the million-pound final question incorrectly and lost a staggering £375,000.
Also taking part this series is war hero Joe, a tree surgeon from Nottingham, who previously served as a Royal Marine and was shot while on duty in Afghanistan, according to ITV. Now using a robotic leg, Joe's inspiring story has already attracted attention, according to ITV. It remains to be seen whether his endeavour on the quiz will result in any winnings.
