The number of suspected meningitis cases in the United Kingdom is rising. On Saturday, 23 cases were confirmed and another 11 are under investigation, according to the latest update from the health authority UKHSA, as reported by Sky News. The infectious bacterial disease has previously been confirmed among students at four schools in southeastern England and in one student in London.
Authorities have reportedly vaccinated 4,500 people and distributed 10,500 doses of antibiotics. Two young women have previously died. The outbreak has reportedly been traced to a nightclub in Canterbury in connection with a student event.
