Meloni Opens Rome Event Celebrating 80 Years of Women's Suffrage
Key Points
  • Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni opened a Rome event celebrating 80 years of women's suffrage in Italy.
  • The event highlighted historical milestones and ongoing efforts toward gender equality in Italian democracy.
  • Further details on the event's program and equality initiatives remain undisclosed.

The event, titled '1946-2026 Voto alle donne. La democrazia compie ottant'anni', was held at the Accademia della Scherma in Rome. A conference was also organized at the Foro Italico by ministers Roccella and Abodi to mark the anniversary.

The dictatorship omitted women's right to vote until 1946. Prime Minister Meloni stated, 'We are here to celebrate one of the foundational moments of today's Italy, and of what we are. ' She added, 'Thanks to that day, six women at the time were able to wear that same tricolor sash for the first time and today they are represented here by many others.

' Meloni also said, 'I think women are winning when they use their own schemes, their specificities, their added value in terms of speed and less willingness to compromise, it applies in every field, especially in politics,' and 'What happened in 1946 started a journey still underway towards full equality. ' A singer sang the Canto di Mameli in front of the prime minister, triggering a sort of patriotic karaoke. The exact details of the event's program and specific policies to further women's equality were not disclosed.
